Early Years project

The project includes the Radstock and Frome areas – working with 15 settings (including schools), and a similar project in Yeovil. It is funded by a NCTL grant following research that found that vulnerable children are more likely to achieve good outcomes if placed in school-based EY settings.

Aims of the project:
• To strengthen partnership working between PVI settings and schools – to develop practice in a collaborative way, with peer-peer support
• Establish models of practice which become self sustaining
• Support raising attainments of vulnerable learners (FSM/PP, EAL, looked after children, etc.)
• Impact on children’s development in PSED, school readiness, language and literacy, and numeracy

How will this be achieved?

The proposal is to work with the already established group within Radstock of schools, PVI settings and BANES EY team, and a similar group in Frome to implement the REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy) initiative.

By using the REAL model we will be able to offer training and practitioner based research and project groups so that settings and schools can develop projects together. These will focus on one or more strands of the REAL initiative: books, early writing, environmental print and oral language, and will involve parents in supporting children to develop these skills.

There will be termly meetings, shadowing and working in each other’s settings to plan and deliver the initiative. We aim for a celebration event to share and recognise the work and achievements at the end of the project.

Support offered through TBMPTS:
• Training event
• Termly cluster meetings
• Shadowing and partnership work
• Funding to release staff to attend and participate

The project will run across both localities and there will be opportunities to work alongside colleagues in both areas as well as in individual locations.
